Langridge Refined Linseed Oil

Langridge Refined Linseed Oil

Langridge Refined Linseed Oil

The highest quality Dutch alkali refined linseed oil.

Linseed oil is the most widely used drying oil because it forms the toughest, most resilient paint films.

Used even in small quantities, it adds a soft, slippery quality when added to oil colours. The paint film with stay open and is easily moved or reworked for up to 24 hours.

Because linseed oils have a tendency to yellow with time, it is recommended that their use be kept to a minimum as a medium to aid fluidity or transparency.

Can be thinned with artists solvents.

Langridge Refined Linseed Oil should be considered a ‘fat’ medium. It should not to be used for underpainting if oil colours with no additional medium are to be applied on top.

Dries to a gloss finish.

Drying time: 48-72 hours to touch dry. Full film drying 3-6 months.

Langridge Low Toxic Solvent

Langridge Low Toxic Solvent

For an even lower toxicity solvent see Langridge’s Solvent 75.

Langridge Low Toxic Solvent is a completely odourless, low toxicity alternative to traditional artist’s solvents, reducing exposure to the more harmful compounds associated with turpentine, etc.

Use to add to oil colours, drying oils and oil mediums in small quantities to thin paint or clean brushes and painting equipment.

When using as a diluent on its own, only use small quantities with oil colours to avoid underbinding paint.

  • Low toxic
  • Odourless
  • Use to clean brushes and painting equipment.
  • Mix with drying oils and other mediums.
  • Completely odourless.
  • Incompatable with damar-based mediums.
  • Leaves no residue after evaporation.

Constituents: Refined aliphatic distillate of petroleum.

Low Toxic Solvent has a low solvent action (KB value) making it a highly useful for gentle removal of surface dirt from paint films. (Not recommended for thorough cleaning or varnish removal except by a trained conservator.)

Because of its construction, Langridge Low Toxic Solvent cannot be used for the home manufacture of artists’ varnishes (natural or synthetic). Damar Resin cannot be dissolved in Langridge Low Toxic Solvent or any other petroleum distillate.

Langridge Solvent 75

Langridge Solvent 75

Langridge Solvent 75

The Lowest toxicity art solvent available!

Solvent 75 is a highly refined odourless mineral spirits that is not classified as dangerous goods and can be legally shipped by air, marine and road transport (with a flashpoint of 75 degrees Celsius from which the product gets its name).

You can use Solvent 75 as a diluent in small quantities with your oil colours.  Care should be taken in diluting purely with solvent as its over-use, like all artist’s solvents, can easily underbind paint and lead to a dull, dry lifeless film with potential for dusting or flaking off.

Solvent 75 can be added to artists’ drying oils (such as linseed oil) and other oil mediums to add extra fluidity.

Solvent 75 can also used to clean dried paint films and to clean brushes and painting equipment.

Introduced to replace existing artists’ solvents for use as a diluent and solvent of oil colours, its benefits include:

  • Dramatically reduces respiratory exposure to harmful solvents.
  • Issues of skin irritation are markedly decreased or removed.
  • This product is not classified as Dangerous Goods.
  • Can be shipped by air, marine and road transport (no additional charges for shipping hazardous goods)
  • Leaves no residue after evaporation.
  • Flashpoint: 75 degrees C (167 degrees F)
  • Permissible Exposure Level (PEL): 300 parts per million parts.

Solvent 75 has a low solvent action (KB value) making it a highly useful for gentle removal of surface dirt from paint films (Langridge does not recommend thorough cleaning, including varnish removal, of artworks except by a trained conservator.).

Because of its construction, Langridge Solvent 75 cannot be used for the home manufacture of artists’ varnishes (natural or synthetic). Damar resin cannot be dissolved in Langridge Solvent 75 or any petroleum distillate.

Solvent cannot be sent via Australia Post and therefore cannot be shipped to a PO Box or Parcel Locker Address. Additional Postage charges may apply and you will be contacted at time of shipping regarding this if applicable.

Langridge Underpainting Medium

Langridge Underpainting Medium

This medium is a highly fluid, lean medium for creating the underpainting or “first-sketch” of your oil painting.  Mixing this medium with your oil paint will allow you to create watercolour style wash effects without losing the richness and vibrancy of your oil colour.

Initially adding small amounts of the underpainting medium will aid the flow of your oil paint. As more underpainting medium is added to the oil colour the opacity of the paint will be reduced.

There is no need to worry about underbinding your oil paint with this fluid underpainting medium, you can use as much underpainting medium as desired to achieve your desired effect.

The advantage of using underpainting medium rather than diluting your oil paints with solvents/mineral spirits is that you can maintain the vibrant, richness of your oils and avoid the potential for underbinded paint which could dust or flake off or look dull, dry or lifeless.

This is a lean medium and should not be used on top of fat or slow drying layers of paint.

Low oil content for rapid drying, minimising the chances of cracking when overpainting with full strength colours.

Drying time: 18-36 hours to touch dry.

Contains gum turpentine.

Langridge Painting Medium

Langridge Painting Medium

Langridge Painting Medium

Non-yellowing free-flowing medium added to oil and alkyd paints to improve paint handling and promote the brushing out of colours.

Initially small additions will aid the flow qualities of your oil colours. As more medium is added to the oil paint the transparency will be increased due to the further dispersion of the pigment throughout the medium.

After 20-30 minutes of applying Langridge Painting Medium the surface will set-up to a tack that grabs any succeeding brush strokes.

The wet, but tacky, paint surface can be readily painted into, even quite aggressively, without moving or disturbing the areas of fresh paint underneath. This allows for a wet-in-wet technique with very controlled manipulation of paint including soft blending.

The stand oil used in the Painting Medium has pronounced levelling qualities. If more than 50% is added to the oil paint, the resulting paint film will exhibit an enamel finish with little or no physically raised brush marks.

The stand oil content in the medium ensures pale colours stay bright whilst deep tones are enriched.

In accordance with all Langridge Painting Mediums, Painting Medium is formulated with a proportion of oil to solvent that can be used without restriction in glazes and washes without risking under-binding the pigment from the oil.

  • Non-Yellowing
  • Free-Flowing
  • May be added to oil colours in quantities at the discretion of the artist.
  • “Fat” medium – do not use for underpainting or under oil paints with no added medium
  • 24-48 hours to touch dry. Any airflow over the surface will evaporate the solvent more rapidly which will reduce drying times. Full film drying 3-6 months

Constituents: Stand Oil (40 Poise), Distilled Gum Turpentine, Alkali Refined Linseed Oil, Cobalt Drier.

Langridge Glaze Medium

Langridge Glaze Medium

Glazing is the application of a layer of transparent paint that sits on top of existing painted areas not unlike a layer of coloured film. The transparent glaze can alter the colour of the painting beneath without obscuring the image.

The Damar Resin content in Langridge Glaze Medium gives brilliance to these glazes and allows for extraordinary luminosity as light passes through the glaze. For artists who wish to apply clean, bright glazes, it is recommended choosing transparent pigment based colours.

Because Langridge Glaze Medium is highly fluid it can be used for the controlled application of fine detail, however it is versatile enough to be used for broader techniques such as a watercolour style ‘wash’ effects without losing richness and vibrancy. Because of the Damar content, broad ‘washes’ using Glaze Medium have more ‘slip’ than Langridge Painting Medium in application.

Adding small amounts initially will aid the flow qualities of your oil paints. As you add more glaze medium to your oil paint, the transparency will be increased due to the further dispersion of the pigment throughout the medium.

Langridge Glaze Medium is formulated with a proportion of oil to solvent that can be used unrestrictedly in glazes and washes without risking unbinding the pigment from the oil.

After 20-30 minutes of applying Langridge Glaze Medium the surface will set-up to a tack that grabs any succeeding brush strokes. The wet, but tacky, paint surface can be readily painted into, even quite aggressively, without moving or disturbing the areas of fresh paint underneath. This allows for a wet-in-wet technique with very controlled manipulation of paint including soft blending.

Langridge Glaze Medium has a medium oil content and, as such, is a ‘fat’ medium. It should not to be used for under painting if oil colours with no additional medium are to be applied on top.

12-24 hours to touch dry. Any airflow over the surface will evaporate the solvent more rapidly which will reduce drying times. Full film drying 3-6 months

  • Create brilliant transparent glazes
  • Fluid for use in controlled fine detailed areas
  • Can be used for wash effects
  • Fat medium for using on top layers of your painting.
  • Dries to a Satin finish
  • 12-24 hours to touch dry.
