Glass Slab for Pigment Grinding
Mix your own colours and make your own paints on this glass grinding slab!
The Langridge glass grinding slab is an 8mm thick glass slab used for the manufacture of artists paint. It has an etched face for the high-shear grinding of pigment with binders.
Pigments need to be bound to become a paint. For complete dispersion of the pigment in its binder the use of a muller and slab is essential for maximum durability and performance of the finished paint.
Make your own oil paints by mixing an oil medium (such as linseed oil) with your powdered pigments then grinding on the glass slab with your muller on the glass slab, applying pressure and moving in a figure eight motion until no grains can be seen and no grittiness is left.
Pigment to oil ratios vary depending on chosen pigment. Always try to make paint with the minimum of oil to produce a workable consistency, thereby minimising yellowing and wrinkling.
